Alexandra Byrne´s “300: The Rise of an Empire”

You know Alexandra Byrne for making the costumes of all The Avengers (2012), Thor (2011), Guardians of the Galaxy (2014). She won the oscar for Costume Desing in Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007).

When i found out that Alexandra Byrne was doing 300: The Rise of an Empire, i was dying to see what she was gonna do! And she never disappoints, what a movie!!! I mean i loved the story, the characters, and of course the men! But i actually liked this movie better than the first 300 movie.

I can remember the first 300 movie being in shades of amber, yellow, red and gold, and i do like those colors, but i´ve always been more of a cold color type of person. Of course when i saw 300: The Rise of an Empire i noticed that everything was different. All those amazing blue capes with gray surroundings made me happier. gerard-butler-300-movie maxresdefault

The change of color in this movie was really refreshing. I guess i admire the director for being so careful with this process, every detail matters to the director and to the costume designer, you can see that nothing was left to chance.

A costume designer has to take into account the script, the scenario in witch the movie takes palce, because the use of the colors in the enviroment of a movie or even in theater are one of the most powerful tools a designer can use to enchant the audience, you can make the spectator understand the story in a more intimate way using the right colors.

The scenarios blew me away but what really amazed me in this story was the villain Artemisia, performed by the actress Eva Green, has by far the best costume of all charcaters in this movie. The costume designer created an evil character with two colors and very carefully chosen accesories.

Artemisia (Eva Green) is a warrior, a navy comander, and a very scary one. She has this bloodlust that you can actually see in her eyes.

I believe the costume was designed in a way that shows she is always ready for a fight, but at the same time she is elegant, femenine and intimidating. With only two colors, black and gold, the designer gave the character a certain personality, and a personal signature.

As you can see she is part of the darkest scenario, i´m sorry, she is the darkest scenario of the movie, and she definitely outshines everything around her, even in the darkness she evokes. In a certain point of the movie i actually thougt: “OMG this girl is a psico, but she looks AMAZING!” I would actually use one or two outfitts in the red carpet.

Every fabric, every ring, every leather application was carefully choosen by the designer, nothing felt random in the making of this movie. I think that Alexandra Byrnes successfully made one of the best villains of all time.

I cant wait to see what Alexandra Byrnes does in “Avengers: The Age of Ultron” (2015)

To sum up, i loved this movie, the costumes, the color, the story, well… pretty much everything. Highly recommended, and don´t forget, look for the details, they make the movie!
